Item Analysis and Test Equating in the Age of AI

Abstract

The purpose of this workshop is to introduce two important aspects of language testing: CTT-based Item Analysis and Rasch-based Test Equating via the Rasch-GZ. This workshop is fully in conformity with your conference theme. As for the AI element incorporated in our Rasch-based software, at least four aspects (among others) are briefly summarized here for your consideration:

(1) Rasch-GZ is menu operating, NOT like the other currently Rasch-based software (e.g. WINSTEPS) or IRT-based counterparts (e.g. BILOG or PARSCALE) which need 'control file' or 'command file'. Rasch-GZ just needs a data file. Once the data file is imported as required, simply click the mouse to get work done. In case anything goes wrong with the data format, the system would automatically pop out hints in both written and spoken mode, guiding the user, step by step, to complete the job, in the way an instructor does;

(2) The system could generate output file either in English or Chinese or any language the users prefer to have;

(3) In case the needs arise, online technical support in the form of Wechat could be provided, just like two people communicating via Wechat;

We believe that currently, so far all the other Rasch-based software counterparts are unable to fulfil the above tasks, though Rasch-GZ is still under further development.

The workshop falls into three parts (60 minutes is enough). English is used during the workshop time. Or if necessary, we could shift to Chinese Mandarin.

Research background, Classical Test Theory (CTT), Rasch measurement, item analysis, test equating, and the significance of these methods.

Demonstration of Rasch-GZ

A practical Rasch-GZ demonstration with classroom practice. Participants may bring their own laptops and data for on-site analysis.

Q & A.

Open discussion on installation, parameter interpretation, output files, and use cases in language testing and educational measurement.

Prof. Quan Zhang

City University of Macau, SAR, China

Prof. Zhang works in language testing, computerized cognitive testing, item analysis, test equating, IRT, and Rasch measurement. He has served as Secretary-General of the Pacific Rim Objective Measurement Society (PROMS) for mainland China since 2012.

He led the development and updating of the Rasch-GZ system, an AI-supported Rasch-based platform for item analysis and test equating, and authored Rasch Model for Language Testing: Advances of PROMS and Rasch-GZ with Use Cases, published by Taylor & Francis.
